What I Use: Evernote and Microsoft Word for Writing

As part of a wider move to cloud-centric solutions, I've switched my day-to-day writing to Evernote, which provides excellent web, PC, and mobile clients. But I'm still using Microsoft Word for my most critical work, such as my next book, Windows 8 Secrets. more

Blast from the Past: Buying a Computer in 1995

Digging through my archives recently, I came across a PC buying guide I apparently wrote in late 1994 and early 1995. While the origins of this document are unclear, it's fun to look back at how much things have changed, and realize how much simpler and less expensive this is today. more

What I Use: Late November 2011

A lot has changed since my August update: I'm using the Windows 8 Developer Preview almost exclusively, I've changed up my server configurations, and I'm starting to use tablet computing devices more. Here's a more up-to-date look at the hardware, software, and services I use regularly. more

MSFT v.Next: Clues to the Future at Microsoft's Annual Shareholder Meeting

What I Use: August 2011

It's been a while since I published a "What I Use" article, but I have an excuse of sorts: When we converted this web site over to Dot Net Nuke, we misconfigured the What I Use page as a static HTML page instead of a dynamic site section where I could add articles over time. That's still not fixed, but I figured I'd jump the gun and provide a quick update. more

Achieving Nerdvana with Big Nerd Ranch

I spent much of last week attending Big Nerd Ranch iOS developer training at Historic Banning Mills in Georgia. Here's the story behind my trip, the class I took and the developer issues it addresses, and Big Nerd Ranch founder Aaron Hillegass, who has an interesting history of his own and even bigger plans for the future. more

What (Else) I Learned at TechEd 2011

Last week, I set out to write an overview of the Microsoft announcements and interesting products from TechEd 2011. The resulting article, What I've Learned (So Far) at TechEd 2011, was thus somewhat of a failure since it really covered only two products: MultiPoint Server 2011 and Windows Phone 7 "Mango." Sorry about that. But here's a wrap-up of the other interesting news from TechEd 2011. And as you'll soon discover, there was a lot more happening at the show. more

How Microsoft Can Fix Microsoft

When I look back over the past decade with Microsoft, I see lots of missed opportunities. The 2000s was the time when Microsoft ceded control of the tech industry, and while it will continue into the future as an enormous, financially successful superpower, my concern as a technology enthusiast is that Microsoft, by ceasing to lead, will cease to be interesting or relevant. Is it time to fix Microsoft? more
